Learning how to shoot with my new camera

Hey guys, thanks for stopping by. As I mentioned in the previous post I've recently changed over to Sony A7C and its been very different shooting with that camera the two times so far. In this little post I wanted to share a few more views on this little camera and how it is shooting street photography with it. Let's dive in!

So, the A7C. A bit of a love it or hate it camera if you look across the internet at the reviews. Im happy to say I love the little guy, however there are a few things that are very different for me and I need to learn how to work around the quirks to get the best from this camera.

These most recent shots where all taken with the Samyang 45mm F1.8 lens stuck to the front if the A7C. Spoiler alert, the 45mm may not be for me, but that's a whole different blog coming soon. I decided to meet up with a friend who lives close to me and took these photos whilst walking to and from the coffee shop. Again, off topic but the coffee wasn't all that good this time round. So sad.

A7C Viewfinder/EVF

Any way, one thing that I am really loving about this camera is the evf. Yes its very small and not super high resolution but its situated like a range finder camera. Top left of the camera body as you look at it from behind. I must say, I really love this rangefinder style. Okay, yes the viewfinder is small but the feeling and involvement it seems to give me when I raise this camera to my eye is super nice. Love this!

The quirk here is the small size but more so about how precisely I have to position my eye to get a clear view, that's what's annoying me so far. I do feel that muscle memory and practice will help here and eventually I'm sure ill get used to this and work around it no problem at all.

Articulating Screen

Again I've never had an articulating screen before and its actually really nice, especially for low angle vertical shots. This is a game changer actually! The ability to flip the screen out and to the side and manipulate it into any position really allows me to either shoot in a very inconspicuous way or compose a shot I wouldn't have been able to otherwise.

Yes it can be a little slower to move the screen to where you need it if its flipped into a certain position but I think that's a worthwhile trade off.

One more nice element of the screen is being able to rotate it into storage mode, the screen facing the back of the camera. Super nice for keeping the screen free of scratches and also for rocking the camera and ignoring the LCD. Almost like a film camera shoot and forget the images. Pretty cool!

Autofocus

Kind of obvious with a modern Sony camera, but the autofocus is just insanely quick. Even when using my Samyang lenses, it is instantaneous, or at least really fast. I feel once I manage to get some of the native Sony lenses the autofocus will be even better.

Its something I really didn't even know I wanted or needed. Fast AF has always been a kind of fashion, or a phase that didn't really appeal to me, but once you've sampled that Sony magic, I don't think you can go back to anything else.

Its not without its quirks though as I mentioned. Yes the AF is lightning quick, but configuring the different modes and settings to suit me is proving a little tricky. I use back button focusing and whilst that works great in eye AF mode, its not feeling 100% fluent in single point modes just yet.

Also the lack of a joystick to move the AF points around is a little annoying sometimes. However, the ability to move focus points using the screen as a touchpad is actually really nice.

To conclude

So far so good with my new Sony life. Im really excited for street photography again plus travel photography with this little beauty is going to be awesome too. Its still early days with the camera and like I mentioned many times, I need to spend more time shooting and learning this new system. I am certain this camera will help me improve and inspire me to get out and shoot more.
